ULTIMATE LEAGUE
Overview of the Three Phase Draft

Cost and Registration Information

GENERAL NOTES

Each team begins the draft with $17,000,000. (additional carry-over funds from previous year may be available). After the draft is completed, each franchise will be given $3,000,000 in cash (in addition to any un-spent moneys from the draft). This cash is for mid-season signings and operating expenses during the year.

Owners pay players their entire yearly salaries at the beginning of the year. No refunds are given for waived or traded players. Even though you are given a total of 20 million to spend, at no time may your roster exceed $18,000,000 in "contract" totals. This is your contract (Salary) cap. The cap is important also when considering or trying to complete trades. Salary Caps are determined by the "per year" salary, not the total of the contract.

The draft consists of three phases where "bids" are made in an effort to acquire players. Players may be "signed" for one, two or three years. Most of the best players are bid on in Phase I, however some do slip by and are available in Phase 3. Team owners are given a second chance in Phase 2 to make "counter bids" on players previously bid on in Phase I. Rosters are completed with players from Phase 3. Forms for each Phase will be given to you when you reach that part.

PHASE 1 OF THE DRAFT:

The Basics:

  • List up to 28 National League Football players
  • Maximum total of all bids is $17,000,000
  • Miminum Bid $100,000. No Maximum
  • Bids are increments of $1,000
All bids are per YEAR. (not total of contract)
Determining Contract Years
  • The minimum bid for a one year contract is $100,000 per year.
  • The minimum bid for a two year contract is $250,000 per year.
  • The minimum bid for a three year contract is $1,000,000 per year.

One Year Contract:
The full year salary is paid. There are no rights for next year. You can cut him anytime after the salary is paid

Two Year Contract:
Owner can keep the player for a second year at same salary. The owner can also waive him during the first year or there after. A contract of $1,000,000 or more CAN BE for ONLY two years if so designated by the Fanta*Owner after the completion of the draft and BEFORE the start of Week 1.

Three Year Contract:
Owner cannot waive or drop the player the first year. He must pay the player's salary year two. During Year two, after apying his full year's salary the owner may drop him. Year three, the owner can either keep him at same salary or waive before paying his salary. (Trades relieve you of the responsibility, but not the new team owner receiving the player). Contracts of $1,000,000 or more automatically assumes a three year contract unless the Fanta*Owner tells Fanta*Sports BEFORE the start of Week 1. Once downgraded it CANNOT be upgraded back to a three year contract.

AFTER ALL THE PHASE ONE BIDS ARE IN:
Fanta*Sports publishes all the bids by the participating eight teams. The owner submitting the highest bid will have the Right of First Refusal (RFR), which applys to Phase Two. Therefore just becasue you had "high bid", does not mean you own the player yet. It just means you control his rights for Phase Two. If there is a tie, the computer does a coint flip. To prevent ties, it wise not be bid in round numbers.

Helpful Hints:
  • Don't bid on only superstar quality players.
  • Enter some lower bids on proven veterans and upcoming stars.
  • Acquiring RFR on a number of good players can work to your advantage.
  • Using all your money for bidding is not necessarily bad in Phase I, since you do not rate to be the high person on all your bids. You will receive RFR on between 30-60% of the players you bid on. The number varies depending the popularity of the players you bid on.

PHASE 2 OF THE DRAFT

Fanta*Sports will publish the list of team owners with the highest bid from Phase I or RFR (right of first referral). From this list you will be given a chance to make a new, or another, "counter" bid on any RFR player. You will also wait to hear back on which team owners chose to bid on your RFR players. Thus Phase 2 is done in two parts

Part A is making the counter bids, while Part B is receiving the counter bids made on your RFR's and deciding to either MATCH the higher bid or the player go to the other bidder.

For Example lets say you acquired RFR with a Bid of $550,000 on Joe SuperStar, in Phase One. During Phase Two, Part A, Team number six bids $850,000 for Joe. In Part B, you would then decide to either take Mr. SuperStar at $850,000 or let team six have him. When this phase is over, all RFR players will be assigned to a team and thier salaries deducted from each team's cash. RFR Players that did not receive a counter bid in Phase Two are automatically assigned to the team owner. The owner must take him.

It is only after Part B of Phase Two that any "cash" actually subtracted from your total.

Helpful Hints:

  • Making counter bids is a strategy in itself. Thus there are two types of bids.

    1) Significant increase in bid price to actually acquire the player away from RFR holder.
    2) Make a sheer "nuisance" bid, just to drive up the price for one of your competitors.

Team Owners who are forced to pay more for their "Super Stars", will not as have as much money to bid against you in Phase 3. Do not take this phase lightly.

PHASE 3 OF THE DRAFT

You now have a group of players on your team from phase 1 & 2. Generally speaking these players should be the "core" of your team. Some owners will have little money to spend, others will have lots. All players not bid on from Phase one are now available for Phase 3. This Phase is where you complete out your roster (maximum is 28 players, no minimum number of players). You will be given special forms and instructions to complete this final phase of the draft.

The basics are:

  • Draft Players by postions in sequence:
  • Defense Teams,
  • Special Teams
  • Kickers
  • Quarterbacks
  • Running Backs
  • Tight Ends
  • Wide Receivers

  • High Bid wins the player. Ties are again settled by computer coin flip.
  • Your draft ends when you are out of Money, Roster Spots or Bids.
  • In RARE cases the Fanta*Sports computer has to assign a player to a team with a smaller bid in order to relieve an unsolvable circle log jam.
More Information and strategies will be disclosed at each interval of the draft. The between phase Newsletter is very HELPFUL in answering your basic questions.

Additional Ultimate League Rules
1) When you drafted a player with a contract of more than $1 Million, we assumed you want him for three years. At the end of the draft you will be offereed the chance to cut it to two, if so desire. You must inform us by Line Up #1 deadline. You CAN NOT reverse your decison. So if you are scared at what you paid for a player and do not want the OBLIGATION of a three year contract, that will be the time to bring it back down to two years. If you are unsure about meaning of this rule, call the office.

2) We are giving you THREE Million in cash (instead of the normal two) at the conclusion of phase three. This will provide you with more working capital this year and/or to carry forward to next year. Carryover Cash has importence for next year.

3) In the off-season you may "buyout" any three contract you don't want, The cost is 50%. (This applies to a player going into a second year of a three year contract). You may ONLY use Carryover Cash from this year.

4) Fanta*Sports reserves the right to wave any player (including 2 year of a three year contract) from an "orphan" team at no cost. Fanta*Sports also reserves the right to add enough cash to bring the CASH Balance up to $500,000. Both these new rules are to help Fanta*Sports sell orphan teams and keep your league going.
